Happy Springtime 2008

To all my former classmates from Lynda Loftus Smith - Tuscon, AZ! Many thanks to all those who've been keeping the "reunion fires burning" --- you know who you are: Marian, Ron, Dave and others!!!

After "really" retiring 2 years ago, my husband, DuWayne Smith and I are now settled in one of our favorite places - Tuscon. I'm a retired California High School special educator now doing democratic political volunteer work plus some literacy tutoring with middle school kids. My husband's retired from his 33 year career as a therapist/counselor with the federal government .... his concern for the current status of our new veterans has gotten him named to our congresswoman's "veterans" committee -- to give her input. I go to the local nature parks, tea room and gift shops a lot but he's a "docent" showing people all the all the birds, bugs, and beautiful plants (not my thing)!

Our sons are now married and getting settled with their careers: Matt, 31, an artist and teacher -- Austin, TX. And Branden, 29, not exactly using his journalism degree but happy with his computer "gaming"work is in San Francisco.

Early to Bed and Early to Rise

Having big fun (but not a lot sleep) on the air each weekday morning on 106.9 KFRC. One of our regular and loyal listeners is Ron Johnson who gets quite a bit of airtime too when he calls in!! I'm at the station around 4:30-4:45 so it's early bedtimes most weekday nights. Also have a weekend feature on our sister all news stations KCBS each weekend updating the current top hit songs around the country.

Debbie and I just celebrated our 27th anniversary and our two sons are both in college..one at SF State and one at City College San Francisco. Our daughter graduates from Terra Nova in June and we're planning a trip to Hawaii this summer to celebrate. I try to schedule time each day for a power walk on the beach or a stop at the gym. Makes those visits to In-N-Out Burger feel less guilt ridden.

Can't believe our reunion is just about a year from now. Wow

Happenings

Dear Friends

I've been lucky enough to do some traveling in the last few months. I've started taking one child at a time on a special vacation. Last winter I took my son Ryan (25 and single) on a mediterranean cruise which started in Venice. We thought Venice was magical.








I also just returned from a week in Seattle with my daughter Yvette (29 and married). Her husband was good enough to babysit all week so she could go. We found lots to do there and had a wonderful time. Since I have many children there are more trips planned in the future.

I had surgery in December and have recovered well and am feeling wonderful. Many of the calamities in life turn out to be blessings in disguise. Mine have.

I'm excited to get started on the next planning phase of our 45th reunion. Hope to see everyone there. We'll keep you posted on events.

Dear Family and Friends,

Surrounded by his loving family, Thomas James Baran, 64, went to be with his Lord on Friday, February 29, 2008. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 460 Belle Terre Pkwy. , Palm Coast , FL. The family will receive friends on Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM in the chapel of Craig-Flagler Palms Funeral Home, 511 Old Kings Road South , Flagler Beach , FL.

Tom was born on June 8, 1943 in New York . After retiring from the NYC Police Department, Tom moved to Miami . Two years ago he and his wife retired to Palm Coast . He was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus in New York . He enjoyed playing golf, gardening and was an avid sports fan. Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Kathleen, daughters, Pamela Callahan of NYC, Debra Mosley of Miami, FL, Adele and her husband Fernando Cruchaga of Plantation, FL, Melissa and her husband William Tillman of Palm Coast, son, Richard Wean of Arcadia, FL, his sisters, Patricia and her husband Frank Komornik and Linda and her husband Bill O’Dell all of Yorktown, VA, nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild and many loving nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers donations in his name may be sent to the Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House, 150 Memorial Medical Parkway , Palm Coast , FL 32164 . Arrangements are in the care and trust of Craig-Flagler Palms Funeral Home.

I missed our last get together, but have kept up with the Class of '64 news from emails and now this blog. I recently retired and have been traveling and spending time with my grandchildren. I am looking forward to hearing from more friends on this blog. Thanks to Marian and all for starting this.

Hi,
This is the first time I have ever done this..Ron Johnson has turned me on to blogging.
I want to wish every one a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
We are ending our year with health problems for my husband, Tom, and don't know what the New Year will bring for us. We are hopeful that all will be well and that we get through these hard times.
Please say a prayer for him and keep us in your thoughts
I look forward to seeing everyone at our next reunion. In the meantime, stay healthy and enjoy this JOYOUS SEASON.

The Zang Family Holiday Newsletter 2007

Hi!

Christmas is our favorite time of the year. We hope you are having a wonderful holiday season. Sometimes it is easy to lose sight of what is truly important in life. It is this time of the year when Jane and I rediscover how fortunate we are to have a close family, great relatives, and wonderful friends. Gone, it seems, are the days of traditional Christmas Cards. However, here is a brief snapshot of The Zang Family in this moment of time.



After almost 2 years, Neka gave her last performance in Wicked. She is now in London for a few months, working with choreographer and artistic director, Brian Friedman (So You Think You Can Dance, Brittney Spears, etc.). Neka will miss the friends and cast members of Wicked, but she is looking forward to advancing her career. Plus, her new boyfriend, Jan, lives in London. We're not sure Neka will miss Chicago, having been spoiled by Manhattan. She will be moving to Los Angeles in the Spring of 2008. For the first time ever, Neka will not be with the family this Christmas. We will all miss her.




Mari is in her final year of law school at McGeorge in Sacramento. She enjoyed her additional studies abroad, and worked for the EPA this past summer. Mari also completed her Intern Program with the Department of Homeland Security, and most recently received another Internship with the District Attorneys Office in Sacramento . She will work in her chosen field, environmental law, and not criminal law, as is usually associated with the D.A.s office. Mari is an avid snow boarder, a true 'powder hound." She jogs and plays tennis to stay in shape. We are happy to say she will be home for the Christmas Holiday.

Jane is nursing and Evan is consulting. Duh! No changes, thank God. Mr. Honey, our 2-year old adopted Tuxedo kitty, is definitely a lot of fun for Evan who now thinks he is a professional cat trainer!



Whenever possible, Jane joins Evan on business trips. We've had some nice"vacations" in Orlando , New York , and so on. Heres a picture of us, freezing to death in January, posing in front of the opulent Plaza Hotel New York.

Sadly, this wonderful historic property is being renovated into ultra-expensive condominiums. With Neka in London , it could mean a trip abroad for the entire Zang clan in mid-spring. For the first time in 13 years, we will not be in New York for Christmas. But we're not complaining. We send our prayers for Peace, Health, and Hope to all for 2008.

Happiest of Holidays to each and every one of you.

It's Bob Hansen, just a fishin' and a chasin' my four grandkids around the foothills. Workin' alittle, and thinking of cutting back even more. Two 1/2 days a week is a grind. : )

Couldn't help but put in my two cents worth and wish you all the best too!

I recently played poke4r with a bunch of my volleyball buddies and guess who is sitting across the table but Dan Payette (one year our junior). But what a pleasure it was to hear his voice and share some old memories.

I sure wish you all the best for the New Year and will try not to miss the next get-together.

I confess

I'm relatively sure the statute of limitations has run out so I will make the following confession. On spirit day 1964 the "Ye Old Woodshop" sign and plastic hammer were stolen. It was me, Tim Gerner, and Tom Parker (1965). Sheila Stavish called us "Vandals" at the time, but I prefer to think of us as just "good ole boys" having a good time.
