Westmoor Blue Light Special

The time is running out for the early bird discount on tickets for the reunion. The early bird special runs out on January 15th. So that means your registration must be postmarked by Thursday January 15th to get the $90 price.

Our list of attendees is getting longer with new names being added all the time and we are looking forward to seeing everyone come May. To register go to http://www.westmoorhighclassof64.com/orderform.htm . To see a list of who's coming go to http://www.westmoorhighclassof64.com/whoiscoming.htm

AND THE WINNER IS --------- Judi Descalzo Robertson. That's right. Judi won the drawing for one free nights stay at the Holiday Inn for the reunion weekend. Congratulations Judi!!!!

Jerry Ball reported in with the following:"Jim Fisher , Terry Tarrach, Bob Steele and I met at my house in Santa Cruz for a short weekend to get caught up on old times a couple of months ago. What struck me most is when I would close my eyes and listen to these guys talking, it brought me back to sixteen years old sitting around with my buddies. We are dear friends but have wildly different outlooks on life. We range from far left to far right. The funny part was none of these hard heads (including myself) have deviated one centimeter from where they were back in 1962. The only thing that changed was the body these thoughts were housed in. It was a heart warming reunion and made me realize that the best friends I had I have had for more than forty years. "

I also heard from Pam Towne Lutz who writes that she has been happily married for 35 years and has spent most of that time living in Hawaii. She teaches part time at a local school.

Martin Rist is still in Camden, Maine and is active in Commercial Real Estate Investment and Management, world travel to interesting places off the tourist routes and supporting a primary school in Nicaragua. He loves to travel.

Rich Holcomb can be found in Phoenix, Arizona and owns an expresso catering service. I visited his website at http://www.espressosubitoaz.com/ and loved the idea.

I am happy to announce the arrival of my 14th granddaughter, Samantha Lynn Gallian. My 2 grandsons are so outnumbered.

We have new email addresses for Dennis Creedon, Rich Holcomb, Frank Bento, Pam Towne Lutz and Kathleen Sarubbi Baran - see the website for those.

Merry Christmas to one and all

Dear Friends

I have to apologize for not being in touch but I've been on a wonderful sunny and warm southern caribbean cruise and just got home yesterday to a cold and snowy Utah. I hope the Christmas season finds everyone healthy and making plans to be with family and friends. I know all of you have been very busy also and may have forgotten to get your reunion registration in the mail in time to be included in the free room drawing. Since I've been so out of touch and unable to send a friendly reminder the committee decided to give everyone 4 more days to get you reunion registration in the mail. So absolutely the last day to have your registration included in the free room drawing is Friday the 19th of December. That is, you must have your registration postmarked by Friday the 19th of December.

Registration forms can be printed out at
http://www.westmoorhighclassof64.com/orderform.htm

Stefni Ann Winter 1946 to 2008

We received a letter today from Stefni's husband Jerry notifying us of Stefni's passing.

Stefni Anne Winter Agin died September 4, 2008 after a 17-month battle with cancer.

She was born in Long Beach, CA, in 1946. Her parents met each other folk dancing, but her father died when she was only 5 years old. When she was 16, her mother started taking Stefni to folk dances in the San Francisco region. She loved it, and soon was a participant in Scottish Country Dance under the direction of Stuart Smith, and a member of the Sokoli Balkan Dance Ensemble.

She met her husband Jerry at a Kolo dance. Jerry had two children from a former marriage living with him, Rebecca and Miriam, who were 7 and 5 years old at the time Stefni and Jerry married. Stefni took over the mothering duties, and helped raise these two girls to adulthood.

The family moved to the Pittsburgh region in 1979. Stefni and her husband were members and participants in the Tuesday Night Folk Dance group and the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society. She was a frequent attendee at folk singing and storytelling events.

In 1975 and 1976 Jerry and Stefni attended a summer camp at Sweets Mill, California, which became the precursor to Balkan Music Camp. Stefni first went to Balkan Music Camp at Buffalo Gap, WV, in 1986, and she and Jerry have attended every annual camp since then.

She earned a B. A. from San Jose State University. She studied in the Folk Arts Program at the Tamburitzans at Duquesne University, but did not complete her Masters degree. From 1987 until 1998, she was employed by the University of Pittsburgh as a secretary in the Intelligent Systems Program. For the past 10 years or so, she has been active as a volunteer tutor of English as a Second Language through the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council. Stefni was a founding member of The Balkan Babes, a women's vocal group that has performed at festivals around Pittsburgh for over 15 years.

She was a collector. She owned approximately 30 complete folk costumes from around the world, principally the Balkan region of Europe. Many of the costumes were purchased on any of numerous trips overseas. She had an extensive collection of books about costumes and folk music, as well as records, CDs, and tapes.

In 2007, she was found to have an extremely rare type of breast cancer known as malignant adenomyoepithelioma. A lung was removed in April of that year, and she was believed to be free of cancer until a CT scan in November showed new metastases. She underwent several rounds of chemotherapy, but none of them proved effective. She died peacefully at home with her husband at her side.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry Agin, her daughters Rebecca Agin of Mountain View, CA, and Miriam Riles of Waco, TX, her brother Charles Winter of Corpus Christi, TX, and two grandsons.

A memorial gathering for Stefni Agin was held at 3 PM on Sunday, September 14, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of the South Hills in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.

Donations may be made to the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council, 100 Sheridan Square, 4th floor, Pittsburgh, PA 15206.

Pictures of Stefni's life have been posted by her husband Jerry at
http://picasaweb.google.com/JerryAgin/StefniAgin19462008#
and her obituary was taken from her husband's website http://intonia.com/stefni/

If you would like to share a memory with Jerry or offer your condolences, he can be reached at http://us.mc342.mail.yahoo.com/mc/compose?to=jerryagin@intonia.com

Early November News

I forgot to mention in my last posting:

All reunion reservations are 100% refundable until May 1, 2009. After that date we reserve the right to issue partial refunds if sufficient funds are not available. This is because we have to provide guarantees close to the reunion and may have to pay for meals not eaten, etc.

ALSO Don't forget about the free room drawing. A drawing will be held for one night's stay at the Holiday Inn during the reunion from those registrations that are paid in full and postmarked by December 15, 2009. Last time we had this drawing Diane Rasmussen Myers was the lucky winner.

Our list of attendees is getting longer and we're excited to see that and looking forward to seeing everyone. To register go to http://www.westmoorhighclassof64.com/orderform.htm . To see a list of who's coming go to http://www.westmoorhighclassof64.com/whoiscoming.htm

Lanette Howard writes that she has just taken a pulpit in Grass Valley at the Sierra Center for Positive Living. It is really beautiful there and she is enjoying the community. To read about her work, go to http://www.sierracenter.org/newsletter/2008/2008_Newsletter_Oct_Nov.pdf

Our sympathies to Renee Snyder whose parents have recently passed on and to Lanette Howard whose significant other passed away recently.

We have heard from three of our classmates that the current economic crisis has caused them to lose their jobs because their employers closed their doors. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this critical time in our nation's history.

Michael Albert Mathews

We are saddened to report the death of
Michael Albert Mathews
on 7/19/2008.

We received information that Michael and his wife Lynn had been living up in the mountains above Stockton. Mike had been suffering with Diabetes for many years and was found to have a serious infection. He was taken to Roseville, CA to a hospital which has the equipment that was needed. He was told it was just a matter of days before his death and he had received his Last Rights. His wife Lynn (Terra Nova Class of 65) is staying with Mike’s sister back in the Bay Area for the winter season and is planning to return to the mountains when the weather permits. The park where they keep their house on wheels is closed from before fall through the winter.

We're still waiting on signed contracts for the reunion and will contact everyone as soon as possible after that.

James A Pasha 1947-2008

It is with sadness that we let you know that Jim passed away on Thursday, August 28. It happened while he was washing his already too clean porshe 968. "It was quick and final. I miss him more than I can say. " says his wife Janet.

The class of 64 has lost a great friend. Jim was very involved with the 40th reunion, writing newsletters for us all the time and helping to find lost classmates. I had many great conversations with Jim as I know many of you did. Jim was very intelligent, gifted with many talents, had a great sense of humor and was lots of fun to talk with.

We will miss you Jim.

Another reminder of what a brief time we all have. It was yesterday that we all walked the halls of Westmoor together. Each with our own unique personalities......we never thought of leaving this world, at that time. Now another friend, classmate and dear soul has no more halls to walk in this world. For his wife and family, I am so sorry for your loss. For Jim, thank you for being who you were on this joyous and sorrowful planet. For all of us, for this moment......we still have time to slow down and love what has been given us - to have another moment in time to be the best we can be and cherish what we have,God bless you Jim and your family. See you in the halls of tomorrow.

I will always remember Jim's wonderful sense of humor and his genuine interest in all his Westmoor classmates. He'll certainly be missed and we will indeed remember his warm spirit at next years reunion. Sincere sympathies to all his friends and family.

Although I had classes together with Jim we never really knew each other well at Westmoor ,.. but in our dotage Jim contacted me through classmates .com and over the past 5 years we have been e mail friends. The past 3 years have been a time of transition for me and no matter how down I was Jim had a word of encouragment and hope. I will sorely miss his emails, and most of all his friendship. These memories I will cherish as it is not often this late in life you develop this kind of friendship.

More Class News for August 2008

Class news:

The Gary Mendoza family has permanently moved to Southern California and they are looking inPasadena for a home.

John Restivo and family moved from Auburn 3 1/2 years ago to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico where they are having a wonderful time. They work(volunteer) two days a week at Vista Vallarta Club de Golf and they play 2-3 days of golf each week. They love it there, especially the Mexican people. They say they are very busy and seem to run out of time each and every day.

We found Steve Zarate in Irvine contemplating retirement. He was getting an early start as he called the committee from a vacation over the arctic circle.

Pamela Karp Addington is in Oregon and very involved with horses and charity work. She is the coordinator for the Oregon High Desert Classics, the principal annual fundraiser for the programs of J Bar J Youth Services, a non-profit organization established in 1968 offering services to at-risk youth and families. The programs of J Bar J Youth Services include the J Bar J Boys Ranch, Cascade Youth and Family Center, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Oregon and The Academy at Sisters.

David Mahoney is also involved with volunteer work - he works with Saddle Pals who work with special needs children and horses under UCP and he volunteers with Master Food Preservers teaching home canning and food safety thru the UC Davis Cooperative.
